The Holistic Approach of Tantrayukti

Let us see how Tantrayuktis give a holistic treatment of all aspects of a research thesis. The following verse succinctly presents the role of Tantrayuktis:

यथाम्बुजवनस्यार्कःप्रदीप्तोवेश्मनोयथा।

प्रबोधप्रकाशार्थःतथातन्त्रस्ययुक्तयः॥  (CharakaSamhitaa)

“Just as the sun opens the petals of the lotus to bloom, just as a lamp lights up a house, to illuminate the objects present, so do tantrayuktis enable the understanding of the concepts.”

Tantrayuktis give a set of universal codes for the construction of any treatise and help in defining the basic structure, the rules and theories therein. On a general perusal of the doctrine it can be understood that the doctrine helps in shaping any given text in the following ways. Among the other functions, Tantrayuktis assist –

  • in defining the basic structure of any work (example; prayojana, vidhāna, uddeśa, nirdeśa)
  • in stating theories and rules (e.g. :  niyoga, apavarga, vikalpa, upadeśa, svasaṃjñā)
  • (e.g. nirvacana, pūrvapakṣa, anumata, uttarapakṣa, dŗṣṭānta)
  • In fine-tuning diction and style of expression in a treatise (e.g. vākyaśeṣa, arthāpatti, samuccaya, atikrāntāvekṣaņa, anāgatāvekṣaņa)

We see that all aspects of constructing a technical treatise are covered. Now we shall discuss these yuktis in detail with some examples. Yuktis that assist to define the basic structure of a work:Yuktis such as prayojana – objective of the treatise, adhikarana – topics, vidhāna – arrangement of the topics, uddeśa – general pattern of enumeration aid the author to format a template based on which the whole text could be constructed. The structure of the text is hereby determined. It will be the foundation on which the superstructure of the treatise will stand.

Application of the YukticalledVidhāna in Kāvyamīmāṃsā –

Vidhānais defined as – “The statement of the order of enumeration of topics of the treatise is arrangement. Author of Kāvyamīmāṃsā, Rajasekhara shows the place of application of this yukti in his text. He named the first chapter as “Sāstrasańgrahaḥ. In that, he enlists the topics as –  शास्त्रसङ्ग्रहः, शास्त्रनिर्देशः, काव्यपुरुषोत्पत्तिः, शिष्यप्रतिभा —-देशकालः भुवनकोशः इति कविरहस्यम् प्रथमाधिकरणम्। Thus by enlisting the topic under discussion with the use of the Yukti – vidhāna the reader gets a clear picture of the contents of the work.

Application of the Yukti called Apavarga in Suśrutasaṃhitā

The restriction of a pervasive rule is exception. Let us see how Sushruta illustrates it in his text. The place of application of the yuktis is in the context of prescribing medication for poisonous bites. Sushruta says –

अस्वेद्या विशोपसृष्टा अन्यत्र कीटविषादिति  (Suśrutasaṃhitā 6.65.18)

The rule is – fomentation should not be applied to persons suffering from poisoning. And the exception – But it should be applied to those suffering from insect poisoning. This is a sample of how these Yuktis help to present the rules and observations.

Components of the Doctrine of Tantrayukti

These consist of three basic elements:

  • तन्त्रयुक्तिः Tantrayuktiḥ – these are tools that help a scholar to present ideas in a systematic manner, and to prepare a dissertation or technical text.
  • तन्त्रगुणः Tantraguṇaḥ – these are the characteristics of a good treatise.
  • तन्त्रदोषः Tantradoṣaḥ – these are the flaws that impair a systematic treatise.

There are several characteristics listed as Tantraguņas that are considered as overall features of a good treatise. These are nineteen in number.

Tantraguṇa – Features of a Good Treatise

  1. सुमहद् Sumahad – comprehensive in size and content
  2. यशस्वी Yaśasvī – dhīrapuruṣasevitam – consulted by the reputed and successful
  3. आप्तजनपूजितम् Āptajanapūjitam – revered by peers
  4. अर्थबहुलम् Arthabahulam – rich in meaning
  5. त्रिविधशिष्यबुद्धिहितम् Trividhaśiṣyabuddhihitam – caters to all levels of students
  6. अपगतपुनरुक्तम् Apagatapunaruktam – non-repetitive in content
  7. आर्षम् Ārṣam – follows the Rishi tradition
  8. सुप्रणीतसूत्रभाष्यक्रमम् Supraņītasūtrabhāṣyakramam – follows briefing and elaboration systematically
  9. स्वाधारम् Svādhāram – well-evidenced
  10. अनवपतितशब्दम् Anavapatitaśabdam  – appropriate words

  12. पुष्कलाभिधानम् Puṣkalābhidhānam – rich in synonyms
  13. क्रमगतार्थम् Kramagatārtham – sequential in explanation
  14. अर्थतत्त्वविनिश्चयप्रधानम् Arthatattvaviniścayapradhānam – centred on establishing facts
  15. सङ्गतार्थम् Sańgatārtham – logical flow
  16. असङ्कुलप्रकरणम् Asańkulaprakaraņam – without mixed up sections
  17. आशुप्रबोधकम् Āśuprabodhakam – easy to understand
  18. लक्षणवत् Lakṣaņavat – endowed with definitions
  19. उदाहरणवत् Udāharaņavat – endowed with illustrations

Any good instruction manual should contain not only what to do, but also explain the mistakes to avoid. Hence the possible mistakes one may make are also listed and explained in order to avoid. These are fifteen in number. Here is the list.

TantradoṣaCommon Mistakes in Treatise Composition

  1. अप्रसिद्धशब्दम् – Aprasiddhaśabdam – unknown word
  2. दुष्प्रणीतम् – Duṣpraņītam – not a systematic composition
  3. असङ्गतार्थम् – Asańgatārtham – no logical flow
  4. असुखारोहिपदम् – Asukhārohipadam – words that are difficult
  5. विरुद्धम् – Viruddham – internal contradictions
  6. अतिविस्तृतम् – Ativistŗtam – verbose
  1. अतिसङ्क्षिप्तम् – Atisańkṣiptam – cryptic

  6. व्याहतम् – Vyāhatam – self-refuting
  7. अनर्थकम् / अपार्थकम् – Anarthakam / apārthakam – meaningless
  8. भिन्नक्रमम् – Bhinnakramam – non-sequential

Contemporary Relevance of Tantrayukti is seen in providing a systematic framework for organizing knowledge and structuring information across disciplines. The scheme offers guidance for academic writing, technical documentation, and research papers, ensuring clarity, coherence, and logical flow. This assists in comparative studies of classical texts and modern interpretation, serving as a manual for effective communication, avoiding ambiguity, redundancy, and confusion in complex texts.Understanding Tantrayukti strengthens the scholarly tradition of precision, clarity, and systematic reasoning in any discipline.

By integrating these principles, authors and researchers can construct, interpret, and present knowledge in a coherent and impactful manner.
